In Boston, we understand that drivers are too often in a hurry and not always careful to look for pedestrians. Unfortunately, sometimes careless, hurried drivers will hit a pedestrian with the right of way. Most people use a crosswalk when deciding to cross the street. In Massachusetts, the pedestrian in the crosswalk is supposed to have the right of way. Over the holiday, an incident at a local Boston hospital reinforces the statistics and reasoning behind the rearview cameras discussed in the last blog. One life that was just lost could have potentially benefitted from such a requirement in vehicles, especially large ones with many blind spots. A pedestrian was hit by a truck that was backing up on the grounds of St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Boston. We have posted several blogs during the past year about pedestrian accidents. There were four in November, four posts in October and ten during the summer months. Central Street in East Hampstead is a two-lane road without much of a shoulder, although the shoulder is clearly marked. If a person was walking on the shoulder, and a car was driving within its lane, there is no reason why an accident should occur. The aerial view shows that the neighborhood is primarily residential. According to a bird's-eye view from Google maps, the intersection of Wilbur Avenue and Harvard Street in Swansea, is a T intersection where Harvard Street dead ends at Wilbur. There are run down sidewalks, faded crosswalk markings on Harvard Street and a moderate shoulder for the two lane roads. It was at this intersection at about 7:29 in the evening when a pedestrian crossing Wilbur Street was struck by a car driven by a 58-year-old woman.
