Police: Massachusetts college student killed in drunk driving crash
A short distance north of Boston sits Gordon College, where students are mourning the loss of a freshman killed by an allegedly drunken driver.
The 18-year-old from Middleborough was on Route 44 in southeastern Massachusetts at about two in the morning this past Saturday when the collision occurred.
She was pronounced dead at the scene of the Lakeville accident, police said.
The other driver, a 23-year-old woman from Middleborough, was driving a Dodge Ram pick-up. She was to be arraigned on vehicular homicide charges in court today.
The Gordon College president said in a statement that the death “is a tragedy and shock to all of us.”
The community at the Christian college was asked to pray for the victim who died on the eve of Easter.
About 1,500 students live on the campus; most will be returning to the sad news today after having Good Friday and Monday off.
The student was alone in her 2004 Hyundai at the time of the crash. The woman in the pick-up had a female passenger who apparently sustained serious injuries. She was flown by helicopter to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
This is the second motor vehicle fatality at the hands of allegedly drunk drivers to affect Middleborough in recent weeks.
You might recall that a former Middleborough High School teacher and coach was hit and killed last month by a man accused of drunk driving, also on Route 44.
A 20-year-old man was charged with motor vehicle homicide after he reportedly ran a red light and slammed into the former educator’s vehicle.
In these cases, it can sometimes be important to families to pursue justice and hold accountable those responsible, including not only the driver, but in some cases the person or establishment that served the driver alcohol.
