A Maine state trooper is on the mend after being involved in a rear-end collision during a highway traffic stop on Saturday night, authorities confirmed.

Trooper Patrick Flanagan was conducting a routine traffic stop on the southbound Maine Turnpike in Biddeford when his cruiser was suddenly struck from behind by another vehicle.

The impact caused the cruiser to spin around and collide with the vehicle he had initially pulled over. Both Trooper Flanagan and the two other drivers involved sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to a news release by the Maine State Police.

Flanagan’s emergency lights were activated at the time of the accident, signaling his presence on the busy highway. Despite the lights, the 25-year-old driver of the vehicle that rear-ended Flanagan’s cruiser did not manage to avoid the collision. Both the trooper and the offending driver were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Following the incident, the driver received a summons.

The exact circumstances leading up to the crash are currently under investigation by the authorities. This incident marks the third occurrence of a vehicle crashing into a state police cruiser within a span of 48 hours, highlighting a concerning trend. Previous crashes were reported in Gardiner and Gouldsboro, as per CBS affiliate WGME, though fortunately, no injuries were reported in those incidents.

Victims of rear-end collisions often face a multitude of challenges, from physical injuries to financial burdens. When such an accident occurs, as in the case of Trooper Flanagan and the other drivers involved, several types of compensation might be at stake.

Firstly, medical expenses are a significant concern. Injuries sustained in rear-end collisions can range from minor whiplash to more severe conditions requiring extensive medical treatment. Compensation typically covers hospital stays, surgeries, medication, physical therapy, and ongoing medical care.

Secondly, lost wages are another crucial aspect. Victims may need to take time off work to recover from their injuries, leading to a loss of income. Compensation aims to cover these lost wages and, in severe cases, may also account for future earnings if the victim’s ability to work is permanently affected.

Additionally, property damage to the vehicles involved is usually compensated. Repairing or replacing a damaged vehicle can be costly, and this form of compensation ensures that victims are not financially burdened by these expenses.

Moreover, pain and suffering are often included in compensation claims. This non-economic damage accounts for the physical pain and emotional distress experienced by the victims as a result of the accident.
