Man Arrested in Boston Turnpike Crash, Injuring Two Workers
Two roadway workers sustained serious injuries following a Boston Turnpike crash on Interstate 90 (I-90) early Saturday morning. According to Massachusetts State Police, the driver, identified as 32-year-old Pedro Campos of Wellesley Hills, allegedly drove under the influence and plowed into a construction work zone, hitting two workers on the Beacon Street Overpass.
The Incident
The accident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. when Campos, driving a Nissan Pathfinder, entered the work zone. At the time of the crash, the left lane of I-90 remained open to traffic, while the center and right lanes were closed for construction. Campos reportedly lost control of his vehicle, crashing into an elevated lift that had two workers aboard. Both workers were thrown from the lift and suffered severe injuries.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and found Campos’s vehicle embedded in the work zone equipment. The workers, whose identities have not yet been released, were rushed to local hospitals by Boston EMS, where they are receiving treatment. The full extent of their injuries has not been disclosed, but authorities have described their condition as serious.
Police Response and Arrest
After the crash, Massachusetts State Police shut down all westbound lanes of I-90 to investigate the scene and allow for emergency response. The crash site was eventually cleared, and the road was reopened by 4 a.m.
Pedro Campos was arrested at the scene on charges of operating under the influence and negligent driving. He is currently in custody and is set to be arraigned at Brighton District Court on Monday. Investigators are still looking into the exact cause of the crash and whether additional charges will be filed.
